All At Sea 2018

A series of artworks on Paper & Aluminium exploring issues relating to migration

I begin with an idea, but as I work, the picture takes over. Then there is the struggle between the idea I preconceived... and the picture that fights for its own life.
Georg Baselitz

Rachel is currently working with refugees and refugee communities in UK and beyond - so themes of migration, and the sense that it is vital for every individual to have a place to call home, preoccupies her consciousness.
The aim of this series of artworks is to explore both the physical, emotional and psychological challenges that individuals endure during migration passages, and to use the simple means of pencil, charcoal and paint to capture the visceral sentations that overwhelm so many as they undertake these perilous journeys and voyages.
